A young man has faced court over the fatal stabbing of a “beautiful soul” in Melbourne.
Malwal Aweng, 23, appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court shortly after 2pm on Tuesday, charged with murdering Mayiik Ring.
Police will allege Mr Ring, 32, was set upon by a group of males at about 10.50pm on December 30 in the suburb of St Albans in Melbourne’s northwest.
The St Albans man was allegedly stabbed following an “altercation”, police say.
He was found a short time later near St Albans Rd and was rushed to hospital where he later died.
At the time, police said they arrested three teenagers nearby, who were released pending further inquiries.
On Monday, Mr Aweng was arrested in Mernda and charged with murder, intentionally causing injury, and bail offences.
Details of the alleged attack were not aired during the brief court hearing, however, prosecutor Laura Zubreckyj said CCTV and forensic material would be used as evidence in the case.
She told the court several others were being investigated in relation to this incident, but that she was “not aware if they’ve been charged yet”.
Mr Aweng was remanded into custody ahead of his next court appearance in May.
Friends and family have expressed shock and devastation over the death of Mr Ring so close to the New Year.
“I didn’t know the year was gonna end like this; we just had a few hours to go to New Year’s and we are spending it with tears,” one friend wrote on social media.
“Such a beautiful soul, a good heart and friendly at the same time. Rest In Peace, you’re always going to be in my heart.”
He was remembered as a “humble guy” by the Longhorns Basketball Club.
“I would like to encourage all Longhorns family and alumni, all Mayiik’s friends and family to stay strong during this difficult time,” the club said in a statement.
“He will be remembered for a long time.”
